People who have had a profound effect on my life

  • God
  • My Grandmother who died in 2006
  • My father in law who died in 1997
  • My husband who picks me up when I'm down
  • Jeannine Hood who loves truly beautiful things and words and inspires me in so many ways
  • Renee, my previous boss
  • My friend Darlene who brought me closer to God when I thought I'd lost him
  • Dr. Dan Hayek who was the principal of the school I went to. He always said just the thing I needed to hear at just the right time. One time he gave me an American flag pin that I had for years until I lost it. I was so upset but I think of him every time I see an eagle or an American flag and remember the eagle that was in his office and how he talked about the symbolism behind the eagle. Another time he gave me this little ceramic box that said Alaska and had a rainbow painted on it. I cried when it broke but my husband told me it wasn't the box that really mattered to me but the memories behind it. I realized he was right and that this person was more important to me than I ever realized. I kept going and fighting for what I wanted because he believed in me when no one else did (or cared to tell me) and told me I could achieve what I wanted if I worked for it.
  • The older gentleman that came often for breakfast at the restaurant where I worked when I was about 19 that convinced me to go talk to a guy at the school district about getting my high school diploma through coorespondence. He gave me a card of someone to go see and then kept asking repeatedly if I'd gone to see him yet. I finally did. I got my diploma in 1993. I wish I knew his name so I could tell him how much I appreciated him.
  • Mr Joe Hendrickson (?) who's name was on that card. He worked at the school district in the coorespondence office and helped me get started working toward my diploma and helped keep me motivated until I was finished. When I went to pick up my diploma he made a very dramatic sceen of it and had everyone there clap for me. There were probably only 6 hands clapping together but it was good enough for me. I don't know where he is but I am thankful for him.

Books that moved me

  • The Christmas box story by Richard Paul Evans
  • The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

Music I like

  • Air1
  • I love Guns & Roses especially Sweet Child of mine

  • Maroon 5
  • Willie and Waylen and the boys
  • I love deep voices like Johnny Cash and my dad
  • Christmas music all year round
  • Chamber music and that doesn't count elevators
  • My dad playing the guitar or singing with the radio
  • Riley singing along with me and the Judds

Interesting facts about me

I am married and I have two boys aged 13 and almost 11. I just changed directions in my career and went from loan processing to a nursing aide position. It has been a great change but I'm still learning. I love music and I've always wanted to learn to play the guitar. My husband bought me a nice one with a small portable amp and some day I will learn to play! I also get crafty from time to time. I've recently learned to knit and sew and hopefully I'll be able to make some useful items. My entire family is big on reading and we are big supporters of the Literacy Council of Alaska.

My Thoughts

  1. Dear Nanny,

I wanted to wish you a happy birthday. I sure wish you were here so I could tell you face to face. It's almost been 2 years since you've been gone but I still miss you just as much. Everything I see makes me wish I could show you but I know you can see. It's just not the same to not be able to talk to you about things. I still hear you singing in my head and every time I'm in the shower. I don't know why but I always start singing "just a closer walk with...
  2. Christmas

I had a great Christmas. I got up and stuck the turkey in the oven and climbed back in bed for a while. I just browsed through my favorite magazines (Real Simple and Better Homes & Gardens) and drank coffee. We were expecting my brother in law and his fiance for Christmas but they called to say they were running late so I just tooled around the house in my favorite night gown and my new fuzzy stripped socks (a real hot look HAHA). I cooked...

Hello, Thanks for the note. I am still figuring this site out....

When I clicked on your name, I went to your personal page and WOW it is really beautiful and very interesting. The picture looks like somewhere I have been - was it taken between Fairbanks and Anchorage?

I enjoyed reading about the people who inspired you - and could relate to some of the things you say you want to acomplish. Just to let you know, I also have a great fear of flying - but, I have to fly for my job. So, I borrowed the Nike slogan "Just do it" and I dont give myself the option of backing out because I know that the first time I dont board a plane because of my fear will be the last time I ever fly. It is funny how many people get prayed for during take off and landing - I have had some of my most intimate prayer times while flying! :)

Anyway, today you have inspired me - thank you,
    Karol

Thanks, I really enjoyed putting this page together. I am glad I could inspire you! That picture was taken in Denali somewhere between the princess hotel and the park itself. My husband and I went there on the train for our anniversary in 2006. It was fall and the colors were so beautiful! We had so much fun just checking out the area that we never even made it into the park!!!!!! Can you believe that? I know we will be back though and we'll go into the park. Thanks for stopping by. Maybe I'll see you at Friends sometime.

Thanks Donna; it was inspired by Karen's recent trip to Italy and our discussions about it. Glad you've joined us and good luck with your resolutions!

And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares, that infest the day,
Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs,
And as silently steal away.

~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.
